Appetite for Creation Part 8: Untitled Fury

Making art has become similar to hunting. Either for sport or for sustenance, this sudden urge to create is partially a response to the gluttonous spoon-feeding of media outlets informing us of countless manufactured commercial messages that do nothing but bloat our minds with useless information. Being bombarded 24/7/365 with prepackaged sensationalist "news" is just too much for a reasonable person to handle and for some the only response is to fight back with our own attempts to view the world subjectively and without financial prioritization; mass media is now reaching the point where over-consumption is neither healthy nor productive.

The excesses of the 1980's eventually led to the rise of the disillusioned grunge movement. As realization that the false promises of a previous generation were no longer attainable due to forces beyond control, the truth reveals itself through creative outlets such as music, performance, or otherwise - simply put, the dream of quick and easy riches is once again dead. History shows how the broad appeal that far too many seek in order to obtain the largest market share comes at the expense of finding truly original ideas. Immediate success is easily forgotten when seen in the longer timeline.

The future needs to learn that lasting influence only comes from hard work, determination and the occasional stroke of luck only after the first two criteria are satisfied. As stated in "Art and Fear: Observations on The Perils (and Rewards of Artmaking)":

...art is less polished - but more innovative - than craft.
